We repair Dell Inspiron laptops:

Dell Inspiron 1150, 5150, 6000, 6400, E1505 (and latitude) and similar Dell laptops have repairable motherboard problems that we have developed solutions for. Most repairs cost a $149 flat fee. Full details of which problems we repair and just what went wrong are below.

Update: We now offer solutions for some Dells with an odd series of blinks at the standard repair rate.

Symptoms of a loose power connector:

If your laptop only runs when you keep the power cord in a certain direction, only runs on battery power, switches from charging to battery power intermittently or powers off when running on charger alone, you most likely have a bad power jack. Jacks go bad from everyday use or from the power cord being abruptly removed from the laptop. If you are experiencing any of the above problems, you should immediately quit using the laptop to prevent further damage. We repair the power jack on Dell Inspiron laptops here for the flat rate of $149. Replacing the jack is not as simple as it is on many other brand-name laptops due to the nature of the motherboard of the following laptops: Dell Inspiron 1000, 2200, 5150, 5160, 1150, 600m, 700m, 8500, 8600, 9100, 9300, 6000, 6400, E1505, B130, Latitude D400, D500, D505, D600, D610, D800 and others.

The laptop shuts off when moved:

If your Dell Inspiron powers off when it is moved around or jiggled, you have a loose component(s) on the motherboard. The 1150 and 5150 run very hot. The repeated heat makes things loose. Also, due to a manufacturing problem other components may come loose that can be attached again. If you are experiencing this problem, you should have the unit serviced immediately to prevent further damage. We repair this issue for a $149 flat fee. On some occasions, however, the damage is too severe for repair.

The laptop shuts off after 15 minutes:

If you are experiencing this issue, your laptop is probably overheating. As a safety feature, the machine is turning off to prevent damage because it needs to stay cool. Thermal transfer paste dries up, fans wear out and exhaust routes get clogged with dust and debris even in clean environments. If you are experiencing a shutdown problem, you should have it serviced before the heat damages the motherboard.

Do I need a new motherboard?

Most computer stores and even Dell refuse to repair the above issues and will inform you that you need a new motherboard. Dell charges to diagnose your system and then tell you that you need to pay more for the repairs. If they told you that you need a new motherboard, they were probably correct in determining that the board was defective, but we do offer lower-cost alternatives in many cases. We do not repair every motherboard that we see, but most are repairable.
